This is a sad situation, Maggie. I think you have accuratly portrayed a fairly common situation. More likely more bad man vs. nice woman.
It reminded me of a novel, Drood, written by Dan Simmons. It is his version of what Charles Dicken's unfinished novel, Drood, would tell. A major part of it was when an evil man was introduced who could control ones mind. He actually placed an evil weavil like bug into the person's brain. ..
