MWM: Lady of Lourdes

Mornings With Mary

mary caped in gold
watches over us as we pass
hoping for a glance

This is the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes high over Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, PA. We pass her when we visit Washington DC. She's not easily visible except for a moment when I can crane my neck. Will have to make plans just to visit her and all the other statues and art in the Grotto.

  1. you know,
    it is in the moments that we pause, that we crane our neck to see more clearly, when we make that sweet effort to see;
    that life is caped in gold.

    gorgeous touching haiku with a reminder taken straight to my heart.

  2. Maggie, my beloved detoured for me in 2005 to see the shrine. It is exceptional, well worth the trip. We were heading home from Gettysburg when he saw the sign on the highway. So don't just crane your neck for go for the full impact, you'll be glad you did!
    sweet heartfelt haiku!

    1. Yes, Nonnie! After writing this spoke to hubby. When it's cooler, we can drive down any day. We're both retired...more or less. The chapel sounds wonderful. Glad you got to see it!

  3. To capture gold Mary glinting in the sun would be a treat for any photographer, to get close and personal for all the little details would be fabulous!x

  6. Please be sure to share pictures of all the statues etc when you visit. I have visited the States once and was amazed at the number of shrines you have - here in sunny South Africa we have very very few!! So visit on my behalf as well :D

    1. I will visit for all of us and take lots of pictures although hubby takes the best photos...when it's in the 70s would be nice. This heat is too oppressive to even be outside.
