dVerse: Unplugged

flashlights hidden everywhere
in case of a power outage
hate being in the dark
either way you take that phrase
addicts
both of us
connected to the internet
but i like the disconnect
while he constantly searches for wi-fi
what to do when the power goes off
sit close and talk
about anything...everything
touch
can't reach when we are both
on our computers
him on his loveseat
me on my sofa nest
he's biking now which is great
i'm gardening
unplugged was a different generation
wrapped up in extra long phone cords
trying to speak privately
games of yahtzee and gin rummy
our board games sit in a drawer
because Candy Crush is more fun
aged body can't move
unplugged disconnects me from the world
is it back yet? is it back yet?
wireless is my connection
sometimes a power outage can be a blessing as we remember to do all the things we've unlearned a bit maybe with all the being online... i def. try to have offline time, playing games, going for a walk, just talk.. sometimes i think that our grandparents had it easier to really connect..
ReplyDeleteWe had a power outage last month and yes that's me asking if its back yet ~ The downtime though made us laugh and chat, without those gadgets around us ~ I can relate to this, smiles ~
ReplyDeleteI think it's kinda sad the board games are forgotten in a drawer... there's nothing like that interaction, but it is the reality of the world we live in today... and I'm just as plugged in as the rest.
ReplyDeleteWow, wow, wow, Maggie.....is this ever a good write!! It says it all really. People in a room disconnected from one another, though connected to the internet. And I remember those long phone cords...now a person can be connected from anywhere. It IS good about the biking and gardening though, and yes I hear you about Candy Crush. Ha, seek me out on FB and we can send lives and moves back and forth to each other. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary! You really related to my life at home. And lol to those 15' and longer cords phone cords. Am going to your blog for your name on FB. I'm Maggie Beam on FB.
Deletewhen the power goies out it can be a very good thing...it forces us to be creative again and improvise....we play games as a fam a couple nights a week...usually out at a coffee shop...but there have def been times i was forced unplugged for a while...and that was not fun...
ReplyDeleteThis prompt inspired to me speak to hubby about taking an hour a day unplugged to sit together face to face holding hands and just talk or go to the park bench along the river. Will have to see if he takes me up on the offer. Because I will forget by tomorrow. I can hope.
Deletespeak to hubby about taking an hour a day unplugged to sit together face to face holding hands and just talk or go to the park bench along the river.
ReplyDeleteHow nice,Maggie! Go for it Ma'am! It'll rekindle lots of things under wraps! The paths taken would be most rewarding! Great thoughts!
Hank
I love these lines -- so true:
ReplyDelete"what to do when the power goes off
sit close and talk
about anything...everything
touch
can't reach when we are both
on our computers"...
We want network connections anyhow.. a very truthful write..
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this description of a modern relationship very much.
ReplyDeleteModeration in all things. I find that turning off the computer at a certain time works best. Do other things, together. Addiction is at first a choice. But also, whether laptop or exercise or food or wine, it often also reflects the state of the relationship and is a sign that work needs to be done.
ReplyDeletethe idea of games people once played in a time before, I really like that. Nicely done, great write. thanks
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, sounds familiar ... and not just in the living room. At restaurants, at cafes, even in the cinema. No more people watching, no more shared jokes. An hour a day unplugged? Oooh, very brave, what if we have nothing left to say to each other?
ReplyDeletePower outages are so great to bring people together... You can actually see them in an increase of children born 9 months after a power outage :-) so I reckon it's not only games we have forgot to play.
ReplyDeleteWhen walking in the mountains in the winter the cabins we stay in have no electricity and definitely no connections.. so what happens is that people will spend their evenings talking. Go to bed early and wake up early.
Loved this Maggie - so many times we see this - with laptops, phones. Conversations carried out in the same room via texts. Sad when the possibility of actually having to talk to someone takes a back ward step. This brought back memories for me "unplugged was a different generation
ReplyDeletewrapped up in extra long phone cords trying to speak privately"…sitting quietly behind the corner of the wall whispering :-)
you've captured it... life is very different for couple than 20 years ago... i don't like it's made it better
ReplyDeletewow, such a great take on the prompt. this is so painfully familiar, it makes me wonder how addicted to technology we really are. we should all unplug - and see if it takes us back to more valuable things. beautifully put, Maggie.

My wife & I take time weekly to play cards or board games, or day road trips, and reconnect to our humanity, our relationship. I bitch all the time about how the youth could not survive without their plugged-in techno toys and constant stimulation; but when my wife is on her lap top, and I'm on my computer, the sound of keyboards clacking does not a conversation, or love making create.
ReplyDeleteLove the undertones of desperation here howsoever much we deny a place for it.
