Not A Toy...But Adorable

Save The Frogs Day

Today is Save The Frogs Day. Our mission is to write a poem to educate about this fascinating amphibian. I chose to write about the Namaqua Rain Frog.

 Namaqua Rain Frog
how fearsome he seems
Yet only two inches in length
he thinks he is mean

Home is South Africa
He burrows in sand
Coming above ground
after rains entrench land

Gobbling up insects who scurry in rain
is how he survives in diminishing domain
If threatened or frightened
he puffs up twice his size
and squeals out a roar
too cute to deny

For a video to hear his adorable "ferocious" squeak, please see the video here.

  1. This is gorgeous, Maggie. How cool you found a frog so close to my home! (I'm ashamed to say I've not heard of it - but now I'm the wiser.)

    1. I kinda scrolled to the bottom of the google images thinking others would grab the early cute ones. Apparently rarely seen. The video had me wanting to hold it and comfort it. Poor scared little thing. Thank you for reading and commenting! I only know the tree frog by image. Never saw one up close. I think we are all frog deficient (?). lol

  3. The sad thing is this fellow reminds me of my very overweight golden retriever. That gives me pause! Loved your poem.

    1. Thank you, Sherry. Froggie just puffed up. Diet food for your doggie? We had overweight potbellied pig. Took a year for us to get him to lose 20 lbs.
