dVerse: Memory Gap Lane

dVerse: Remembering Or Not

i remember enough moments
in childhood
that it felt whole
stitched together seamlessly.
i have a happy memory
of my older sister
sitting on the floor with me
in our bedroom
teaching me how
to tie a shoe
and photos shown to me
enough times
to fill in blanks.
a single moment
became an entire event
or even a year of my life

i can't remember
the tv show i saw last week
or the movie
i just paid to watch
that we saw earlier this year
did i just take that pill or not?
did i just say this to you?
do you remember our wedding day?
i remember almost every moment
and vividly recall details
of italy and france.
our times
joy locked away safely
my special stash

  1. its good to keep that special stash of memories...and what places to have them of...it is interesting too the things our minds latch onto like that learning to tie a shoe...i remember the first bike i had, we fished it out of the river, it was rust and purple...i didnt care though...it was freedom...

    1. I wouldn't have thought of that on my own but I do remember my first bike. Most tangible things have bad associations from childhood though. So I don't have one thought without the other. Out of the river? A story in that ;-)

    2. Yes, Brian - that is ANOTHER poem you must write. :)

  2. This is lovely - I know so well how you feel both from my own experience and watching my parents. What to do about it? I don't know but stashing them up is exactly right. I sometimes am conscious of how I live now too in terms of trying to imprint special experiences. Very well put together. Thanks. k.

    1. Thank you. It's good to have new & beautiful memories...untarnished. My past "good" memories were all tarnished. And soon to have puppy. Making all kinds of plans for its arrival. Will be our third "child". First two are tortoise and turtle. Puppy will be hypoallergenic and cuddly. New memories...yay!

  4. It is wonderful that you could keep in store some of those memories.
And it is true some times a moment from childhood seems as if it had lasted for a whole year or so and there are also many things we forget.

Remembering is sometimes not good. I deal with the flashes of the past coming forth my eyes and they are so difficult to deal with because they are destructive.

    1. I find it difficult to stay positive about the future and still get those destructive flashes, HA. Glad you are working through it.

  5. It really is interesting sometime what we remember and what we forget. I wonder too what causes one thing to be remembered so vividly and another thing to promptly be forgotten. The mind really is a mystery sometime, I think.

  7. Very nice. The part about forgetting the pill hits home to me. Even with pill keepers it is so easy to forget. Thank you, it's quite memorable.

  8. I like the picture you draw of your older sister and you. And yes our minds seem to be filled with vivid memories while others are much vaguer.

  11. "my special stash," that is marvelous line. It really spun this together beautifully. I like how you created the nostalgia of childhood memories and the sense of loss with current ones. Great write up.

  14. it is interesting sometimes how our brain works - how we can remember some things in the tiniest detail and others get forgotten so quickly... ha - i taught my little brother to tie his shoes back then..brought back some memories..smiles

  17. Maggie - I understand you have some issues with remembering? so this poem takes on a whole other meaning, but I don't have any excuse and there are large segments I don't remember at all - I must assume time and perhaps "same old thing" is the reason. My childhood was pretty un-traumatic..

    1. I guess I am getting to the age where not remembering isn't such a big deal anymore. Perhaps that makes me more normal. Thank you for reminding me.

  18. We remember depending on prompts, too....I often am reminded of happenings long ago that I had forgotten...but it's recorded somewhere...nice little journey you took us on;/)

  19. I so hear you. I cant remember ANYTHING recent but when I think of my childhood, it is sharp and clear. Likely I was then, too, hee hee.

  20. so loved that seamless line... we busy ourselves just too much

  21. Memories, so hard to keep. I stash thousands of pictures on hard drives trying to maintain some symbols of past lives and along comes a blankety blank and corrupts them. Keeping them 'recorded somewhere' so I do not cease to exist is a constant challenge. Like all of life a challenge.

    1. I often refer to "my past life or lives". Remembering where I stored the memories is indeed a challenge. Your last line is an understatement for sure. Thanks for reading and commenting.
